Co-PI, Dr. Jonathan Friedman

Dr. Friedman is currently a Senior Research Associate at the Arecibo Observatory, where he has been on the staff for 19 years. He is also Director of the Puerto Rico Photonics Institute and a Research Professor at the Universidad Metropolitana. His specialization is in optical remote sensing, and in particular, high spectral resolution resonance lidar measurements of mesospheric metals, and extraction of Doppler parameters, temperature and wind.

He has published in a broad range of topics related to this work, including mesospheric sporadic metal layer formation and morphology, mesospheric metal layer seasonal morphology, the morphology, global and seasonal structure of the metal layer "topside", the thermal structure in the metal layer and its seasonal and semidiurnal variability, and on the technologies required to make these measurements.

Dr. Friedman is a member of the NSF-funded Consortium of Resonance and Rayleigh Lidars Technology Center (CRRL/CTC). The CRRL is an upper-atmospheric facility dedicated to enhancing the scientific contribution of middle atmospheric lidars through a collaborative effort to build and maintain high-quality instruments, train high-quality people, and produce high-quality data to improve our understanding of the atmosphere from the stratosphere to the thermosphere. The CTC develops and standardizes the technologies used by these lidars. Arecibo has made a number of contributions to CTC developments, and PRPI will provide a facility at which extensive development and testing of technologies can take place without interfering with the observational program of the Arecibo lidars.

As a graduate student at Colorado State University, Dr. Friedman worked in the field of nonlinear optics, using stimulated Rayleigh-Brillouin spectroscopy to study orientational dynamics of molecules in simple liquids. He was a teaching assistant for the advanced and optics undergraduate laboratories and worked on the original demonstrations for CSU's "Little Shop of Physics". In all, Dr. Friedman has over 25 years of experience in optics and lasers.
